Scene V

Orgon and Elmire are trying to find a box that Tartuffe hid somewhere.  The box contains important papers that would get Orgon in trouble if other people saw them.  After searching for awhile, Orgon and Elmire give up the search and conclude that Tartuffe might have taken them  with him.  He might also have moved to a different location altogether.  Orgon is still in shock about Tartuffe’s true character.  He did not think that anyone could be so deceitful and cunning.  Orgon promises that he will get revenge on him someday.  Damis comes in and offers to murder Tartuffe.  He is also angered by Tartuffe’s cruelness.  Cleante, alarmed by Orgon and Damis’ conversation, tells them that they should practice some self control.

Scene IV

Cleante ha been mad at Tartuffe for awhile now.  Cleante tells him that it is not very religious to break up a family like he is doing.  Also, Cleante says that instead of attempting to gain revenge by himself, Tartuffe should leave it to God.  when Orgon comes to the house, Mariane begs him that he not force her to marry Tartuffe.  She says that she would rather pick a husband for herself, one that she actually loves.  Orgon refuses to believe that Tartuffe is deceitful and not trust worthy.  When Elmire creates a plot to reveal Tartuffe’s true character, Orgon joins in.  He does this so that he can prove to Elmire that Tartuffe can really be trusted.  Elmire plans to meet Tartuffe in a room, where she has hidden Orgon under the table.  She tells him to stay hidden until he has seen Tartuffe’s true character.
